Kirk Brundage is part of a new generation of percussionists with western training who became immersed in another musical tradition. He got his professional start in his native up-state New York playing in symphony orchestras, theater productions, and chamber music. Earning an MFA in percussion from CalArts, Kirk won numerous awards, including a Fulbright scholarship to Denmark, the International Solo Music Competition in Germany, a Rockefeller grant to Mexico, and a Rotary Fellowship to Japan.
Kirk then went to Brazil where he studied with the major carnaval groups in Salvador, Bahia. He also conducted extensive research on the sacred music of Candomblé, and went into the countryside to learn about the origins of samba. Kirk has played various times in Brazilian carnaval with Bloco Afro Olodum, and has shared the stage with Brazilian pop-star Daniela Mercury at the Latin Grammys as well as drummer Stewart Copeland from the rock-band The Police.
A REMO artist,Kirk teaches at UCLA, and has written a series of instructional books based on his experience in Brazil. Entitled “Afro-Brazilian Percussion Guide: Instruments and rhythms from Salvador da Bahia, Brazil” – they are available from Alfred Music Publishing and at www.afrobrazilianpercussion.com.
